Hi! I'm Krista and you may know me as Georgestown On My Mind on instagram. My love affair with design is a tale as old as time situation. I fell in love with all things design at an early age drawing house layouts (thoughts of wanting to be an architect until I realized Math was not my forte), begging my mom to re-paint my room (never in the house colour palette much to her dismay) and rearranging the furniture (without scratching the floors, of course). I spent most of my 20’s scrapbooking my life away and learning design principals for paper crafting that have turned out to be very useful for interior design!
An example of how I spent my time playing with paper & stamps. Fun fact: I taught scrapbooking classes at a local store & was on Kelly Purkey’s design team. It was an epic time in my life!
After moving home to Newfoundland in the 2011, we bought our first home and I dipped my toe in the DIY waters - painting and refinishing furniture from marketplace (long before it was cool to do that sort of thing) or finding junk to repurpose on the side of the road (think coffee table made from palettes). I had a LOT of fun using galvanized pipes for shelving & painting stripes on my walls. It was quite the learning experience but we all start somewhere.
Eugene, my fur-child, on the aforementioned palette coffee table. It served us well for many years. RIP.
Fast forward to 2018 when we bought my husbands childhood home from his parents after they decided to go on a post-retirement adventure. I started a little account on instagram, Georgestown On My Mind (named after our neighbourhood and a riff off of the song by Ray Charles Georgia On My Mind) and started sharing my DIY journey of transforming our new (old) 1890’s house into our own.
Before we started slapping paint on the walls & changing things. My in-laws furniture was waiting to be picked up by the moving truck. A LOT has changed. Check out Georgestown On My Mind for more.
I’ve done a LOT of cool things in the past few years including renovating my own homes (learning to use countless power tools, wallpapering, painting, tiling, etc.) & I even started renovating other peoples homes & businesses too.
A recent DIY & design project for a friend. Spoiler: coming soon to an Apartment Therapy article.
I’ve worked with some incredible companies - both internationally and locally. We’ve built a strong online community that’s been able to support TWO makeovers for children going through cancer treatment with The Candlelighter’s Association & we’ve hosted FOUR epic holiday decorating workshops with all the proceeds going to Lifewise, a non-profit that supports mental health and suicide in Newfoundland & Labrador.
Our 2023 Candlelighter’s Makeover recipient, Natalie with her family & the team after her new bedroom reveal.
Holiday decorating workshops at Home For The Holidays 2022. We raised over $4000 for Lifewise.
I’ve been featured by some pretty cool publications including Real Simple, Apartment Therapy & attended conferences with some like-minded, amazing folks. Making that list makes me pretty darn proud. It’s been a wild ride so far!
A glimpse at Meridian Experience 2023: an epic conference for designers & content creators.
I’ve always wanted to start a blog for my DIY & design adventures - fun fact: I had a scrapbooking blog for most of my 20’s - but that’s not really this! Well, it is and it isn’t!
This space is for the behind the scenes. The book reports (I’m a die hard book worm), the travel adventures (as childless Gen X, we do go on them frequently), the gift guides, Eugene stories (my dog - if you don’t know him, you will), the ramblings, the fashion - all that stuff that doesn’t necessarily fall in the DIY & Design category. Maybe there will be a little bit of that too?! Who knows?! Why not subscribe and come along on this journey with me to find out. Welcome to GOMM: Behind The Scenes.
Me & my sidekick, Eugene. Getting sh&t done. There’s a husband too but he prefers to be behind the camera. ;)
xoxo
